Free deep clean to local homeless shelter
Faith in People
The ‘Faith in People’ project began in 1998 when the Mayor of Merton, Linda Kirby, invited faith groups across the borough to come together to share information about the good work they were doing to support vulnerable people in their own communities. A gap was identified for a Drop-In centre for the homeless in the borough. In response to this need a steering group was set up that worked tirelessly to turn this dream into reality.
Finding suitable premises and securing funding for the scheme proved difficult. Small sums of money trickled in but there was still no offer of accommodation. Thankfully, the Salvation Army agreed to rent its hall in Kingston Road, South Wimbledon and, at their own expense, installed shower and laundry facilities. In 2012, the Drop-In Centre in Merton prepared and served over 6,000 nutritious home-made hot meals, ran over 600 laundry washes and provided 3,100 showers.
In the same year the Julius Rutherfoord Charity Committee decided to take a fresh approach to corporate social responsibility. Instead of donating money, we decided to share something even more valuable – our cleaning expertise in the form of a free ‘deep clean’ to a local charity dedicated to helping the homeless. We contacted a number of local charities and the response we received from Faith in Action was fantastic.
James Bennett, Operations Director at Julius Rutherfoord:
This was a great opportunity to give back something to the Merton community, where we have a large client base and workforce in the borough. We felt that by offering this deep cleaning service, it was a unique way to do something that would benefit all building users and give them a pleasant and hygienic environment to relax in.
Early on 3rd January 2013, a group of Julius Rutherfoord cleaners and our local Area Manager, Sue Parker, arrived at the shelter with all the equipment, machinery and the resolve to give something back to the community. They wiped, scrubbed and polished for hours. In the end, the result was ‘magical’
Project Managers at Faith in Action, South Wimbledon:
The offer from Julius Rutherford to deep clean our premises at Christmas was a real gift of enormous value. We were really well supported over the festive period with wonderful donations of food, clothing, toiletries and gifts for our service from so many within our community but their gift was a huge help to us, the team!
When we came in to the Drop In after Julius Rutherfoord had worked their magic, we were thrilled at the results. Gleaming floors, kitchen, bathrooms & toilets. We clean at the end of each day but their deep clean made a real difference. We are so grateful and would welcome you back at any time!”
