Prevent norovirus
What is Norovirus?

Norovirus is a genus of viruses most commonly found in areas of high population density, where numerous people are living and working in close proximity such as schools, cruise ships and offices etc.

The virus is highly contagious and infection can quickly spread if the correct preventative measures are not taken.

What are the symptoms of Norovirus?

Typical symptoms of the Norovirus include: Nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea and abdominal pain. But it can also cause a lack of energy, weakness, muscle aches, headache, and a fever.

How can you prevent norovirus?

Norovirus is most commonly spread and contracted through human contact. Contaminated surfaces, either from air transfer or from human contact; contaminated food or water; or aerosolisation (transfer of the virus through the air) are also common causes of infection.

A number of steps can be taken to prevent an outbreak of Norovirus, starting with something as simple as washing your hands with soap and water or, where hand washing facilities are not available, the use of hand sanitisers.

Hand washing is the single most important factor in preventing an outbreak of norovirus however, good cleaning practices can also drastically reduce the spread. Particular attention should be spent on cleaning frequently touched areas such as door handles, lift buttons, computer keyboards, mobile phones, and kitchen appliances such as kettles and microwave ovens etc. All should be cleaned frequently and thoroughly.

Additionally, you should ensure that different cleaning equipment is being used in different areas (kitchen, bathrooms, office spaces etc.). An experienced cleaning company will use colour coded equipment to ensure that cloths and mops etc. used, for example, in the bathrooms are not used elsewhere.

Finally, raw or undercooked shellfish have also been known to infect people with norovirus. Also, remember to wash all fruit and vegetables thoroughly to prevent the virus being transferred in this manner.
