They help us through the working day and warm us up during the winter months, but whether you’re a lover of tea or coffee, your office mug may hold more than your desired hot beverage! In this blog post, our cleaning specialists get to the bottom of your office mug and provide some brilliant cleaning tips to help you enjoy your steaming hot beverage worry-free!

Average commercial cleaning companies are in abundance across the UK, but multiple award-winning companies are hard to come by. Julius Rutherfoord offers outstanding cleaning services across London, enabling commercial, educational and community establishments to flourish!

How Clean Is Your Office Mug?

If you’ve ever taken a swig out of your office cup only to discover your colleague’s lipstick lining the edge, you may have wondered what else is lurking inside your mug. Professor Charles P. Gerba of University of Arizona suggests “Colonies of germs are living in your favourite cup”, going on to say that “twenty percent of office mugs carry fecal bacteria, and 90 percent are covered in other germs”. He’s not just talking about communal mugs that are shared by everyone in the office either, but your own office mug that you dutifully clean at the end of each day.

There are a number of factors that can be the cause of this bacteria build-up, but the main one has to be using old, bacteria-laden sponges or scrub brushes to ‘clean’ office mugs and then leaving them to dry on an equally germ-infested dish rack. The sink itself is often another culprit, since food particles that haven’t been properly rinsed from dishes can serve as a breeding ground for bacteria. In fact, studies have shown that there may be more bacteria in the sink than there is in the toilet! This is because, whilst most people take the time to disinfect their toilet, few give their kitchen sink the same treatment.

Furthermore, many simply have poor knowledge of how to clean properly, rinsing mugs with cold tap water and leaving them to dry. The higher the temperature of water, the better its cleaning qualities! At the office, most of us also have busy work schedules, so thoroughly washing a mug may not always be high on the agenda! Bacteria can live on surfaces for up to 72 hours, Gerba says, so it’s worthwhile cleaning your mug properly.

Hiring expert commercial cleaning companies can make a huge difference in work places. Julius Rutherfoord’s specialist team disinfects and sanitizes whole offices to the highest of standards. In the meantime, using a dishwasher, promoting healthy hand washing – the root of many illness-causing bacteria – and swapping the old dish sponges with brand new, dirt-free ones is a great place to start!
