The European Court of Justice (ECJ), the highest court in the UK, has unanimously ruled that David Cameron’s government must take immediate action to cut air pollution. London based environmental lawyers group ClientEarth originally brought the case, but this new ruling, which was headed by the court’s president Lord Neuberger, has ordered “that the Government prepare and consult new air quality plans for submission to the European Commission… no later than December 31 2015″, after the UK breached EU limits for nitrogen dioxide (NO2) in the air. How Dangerous Is Air Pollution In The UK?

Air pollution, both outdoor and in, is a major environment-related health threat in the UK. The World Health Organisation (WHO) says air pollution is responsible for seven million premature deaths a year around the world, and – according to Joe Hennon, the European Commission’s spokesman on pollution – 30,000 of these people die in the UK (which is more than obesity and alcohol combined accounts for). He added that population was an “invisible killer”.

Pollution is the next biggest public health problem after smoking; around 80% of deaths related to outdoor pollution are linked to heart disease and strokes, while 14% are due to lung or respiratory diseases, and 6% to cancer, the WHO estimated. As an environmentally-friendly specialist cleaning company in London, air pollution is an issue Julius Rutherfoord regards as not only important, but vital to everyone’s health and wellbeing.

The new ruling by the ECJ brings a considerable challenge for the government, as under existing plans, pollution legal limits would not be met by at least 2030 – 20 years after the original deadline. The new plans are likely to include the introduction of “ultra-low emission zones”, which will restrict the number of heavy goods vehicles and diesel cars nationally. Alan Andrews, ClientEarth lawyer, said: “This ruling is a big victory for the millions of people who want to live healthy lives in the UK’s towns and cities.”

Here at Julius Rutherfoord we actively limit our fuel consumption with our Greener Fleet management system, which reports on vehicles location, mileage and speed. When we identify poor fuel consumption, we advise our drivers about more eco-friendly and efficient driving styles, which will have a direct impact on air pollution in the UK. All processes are undertaken within London which helps to further reduce transport pollution.
