Anyone who tries to argue that the cleaning industry is for unskilled people is either being patronising, or worse – playing deliberately ignorant.

Cleaning requires skills that must be taught through training, not least the health and safety procedures surrounding the correct use of equipment, and the proper technical knowledge connecting cleaning with good hygiene and infection prevention.

That is why we offer an award-winning free training and development programme for our staff. Training starts with induction at our British Institute of Cleaning Science-accredited Training Academy, and continues at regular intervals throughout their career with us. Our Academy is located in the heart of our Battersea home. It must be one of the cleanest rooms in the UK!

A personal mission

We make it our personal mission to provide free training at the workplace, so our staff don’t have to travel out of their way to learn. Sessions are as accessible as possible for operatives thanks to being conducted in various languages including Spanish, Portuguese and Polish.

We recognise that we have a diverse workforce, for many of whom English is a second language, and we want our new staff to fully understand and engage with the training session so that it is a benefit to them, rather than just a box ticking exercise for us.

The sessions include practical training, such as different cleaning techniques and methods, while we also offer site-specific training, tool box talks, apprenticeships and NVQ programmes.

Not only does this focus on training and development help keep our hard-working and talented team up to speed with the latest techniques – from environmentally-friendly chemical-free cleaning methods to how to use our celebrated Cleaning Management app – but it also helps them map out their own career aspirations.

Pathway to success

By providing a clear ‘Career Pathway to Success Programme’ our staff can identify clear objectives towards achievement. Not only does this improve staff retention, but also
heightens staff engagement.

And it’s not only cleaning operatives who receive training – we hold annual management training days on topics such as employment law and driver safety awareness.

There is no one size fits all approach to training and development, and we go above and beyond to make sure each member of our team has received the right level of training for the job we are asking them to do. No-one steps out in our uniform without it!
